Leonard Lance was elected to the State Senate in Novermber 2001 and re-elected in November 2003 and November 2007. He served as Minority Leader from January 2004 until January 2008 and is currently the Republican Budget Officer. He was a member of the General Assembly from February 1991 until entering the Senate.

Mr. Lance was born in 1952 and was raised in Hunterdon County , where he attended public schools. He holds a bachelor's degree from Lehigh University , where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa; a law degree from Vanderbilt University; and a master's degree from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs of Princeton University .

The Senator served as the law clerk to the Warren County Court in 1977 and 1978. He was assistant counsel for county and municipal matters to Governor Thomas H. Kean from 1983 to 1990. Mr. Lance is married to Heidi A. Rohrbach. He is a trustee of the Newark Museum and of Centenary College in Hackettstown, and he is a member of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.

Senator Lance is the third generation of his family to serve in the Legislature, following his great-uncle, H. Kiefer Lance, and his father, Wesley L. Lance.

Senator Lance has said that he will not support any tax increases; fight for permanent repeal the Death Tax; and for elimination of the Alternative Minimum Tax.

He supports incentives for hybrid motor vehicles and alternative renewable energy production including solar and wind power. He also proposes a temporary halt to further deposits of petroleum in the national Strategic Petroleum Reserve to reduce pressure on demand and alleviate gasoline price increases.

Senator Lance sponsored the bill in the New Jersey Legislature to require voter approval prior to the issuance of future debt. He supports Congressional efforts for a Constitutional amendment to require balanced federal budgets. He also has called for reform of the earmark process in Congress allowing addition of appropriations for special projects of interest to Congressional representatives. He opposes increases in Social Security taxes but supports comprehensive Social Security reform.

He has called for expanded access of all citizens to affordable health care. He supports restrictions on legal actions that increase costs on health care suppliers and providers. He also supports expanded stem cell research.
