A native of Camden City with deep roots in the entire South Jersey region, Donald has been a lifelong advocate for working families, social justice and local charities. After serving as an electrical apprentice in 1979, he rose through the ranks of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers to become assistant business manager of Local 351, a position he still holds today. He was elected president of the Southern New Jersey AFL-CIO Central Labor Council, which represents 85,000 union members, and vice-president of the Southern New Jersey Building Trades Council. In those positions, he has helped create countless quality jobs and improved employee wages and workplace conditions.
Donald has worked tirelessly for the renewal of the city of Camden. As a founding member and vice-chairman of The Home Port Alliance, he led the coalition of business, community and political leaders that brought the retired USS Battleship New Jersey - the most decorated battleship in U.S. history - to the Camden Waterfront. It stands as a monument for veterans and a major attraction for the waterfront revitalization.
Donald has also been a central figure in countless charitable ventures. He has been active in the United Way of Camden County for over a decade, serving as chairman from 2002 through 2004 and since as a member of the organization’s Executive Board. The agency has raised more than $5 million a year for local charities. He has been a member of the Board of Trustees of the Union Organization for Social Service (UOSS), the nation’s first labor agency devoted to community service, since 1993.
Donald is married and the father of three children. He lives with his wife in Camden City. |
*End Wasteful Government Spending*
Our No. 1 priority will be to protect the taxpayers’ interests – even if that means standing up to our own party leaders. We will work to provide real property tax relief to the middle class and working men and women and their families. We can do that by making government more efficient and cost-effective, cutting the wasteful spending that drives up our taxes. We support an annual cap on state spending and zero-based budgeting, requiring the state to account for every dollar it spends and post all reports online.
*Insist on accountable, responsive government—and stiff penalties for politicians who violate the public’s trus**t*
We will push for real reform to change the way business in done in Trenton. That includes increasing the jail time and fines for corrupt politicians, and stripping them of their positions and public pensions when convicted. We will also eliminate excessive government perks like state cars and free housing.
*Promote new jobs and targeted redevelopment to jump-start South Jersey’s economy*
By providing incentives for manufacturing and high-tech companies to relocate to South Jersey, we will help create good-paying jobs and grow our local economy. We will push investment initiatives to redevelop local neighborhoods and business districts.
